LESSON 1.3 — QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE TEACHER
Lesson Objectives

- Identify important qualities of effective teachers.
- Explain why each quality matters.
- Apply these qualities to classroom situations.
🎥 TEACHING SCRIPT
Instructor:
“Let’s imagine two teachers.
Teacher A knows the subject very well but constantly insults students when they make mistakes.
Teacher B also knows the subject well, but listens to students, explains difficult concepts patiently and encourages them to improve.
Which teacher would you rather learn from?
Most people would choose Teacher B.
Why?
Because effective teaching requires more than subject knowledge.
Let’s look at some important qualities.
1. Patience
Students do not learn at the same speed.
A teacher may need to explain the same idea several times.
2. Good Communication
Teachers need to communicate ideas clearly.
If students don’t understand the teacher’s explanation, learning becomes difficult.
3. Empathy
Empathy means trying to understand another person’s feelings and situation.
A student who is struggling may need support rather than embarrassment.
4. Fairness
Teachers should treat students fairly.
This means avoiding unnecessary favouritism and applying classroom rules consistently.
5. Confidence
Teachers need enough confidence to lead a classroom, explain ideas and make decisions.
Confidence does not mean pretending to know everything.
A confident teacher can also say:
‘I don’t know the answer right now. Let me check and get back to you.’
6. Creativity
Sometimes the normal explanation doesn’t work.
A creative teacher can find another way to explain the concept.
7. Adaptability
Different students and different situations require different approaches.
A teacher should be willing to adjust.
8. Subject Knowledge
Teachers must understand what they teach.
You cannot effectively teach a subject you do not understand.
9. Professionalism
Teachers must take their responsibilities seriously.
They should be reliable, respectful and responsible.
Remember:
An effective teacher combines knowledge, teaching skills and positive personal qualities.“
