LESSON 1.2 — THE ROLE OF A TEACHER
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
- Identify the major roles of teachers.
- Explain why teachers have responsibilities beyond classroom instruction.
- Describe the teacher as a facilitator, mentor, role model and assessor.
🎥 TEACHING SCRIPT
Instructor:
“Now that we understand what teaching means, let’s talk about something very important:
What exactly does a teacher do?
If I ask you to list the duties of a teacher, you might say:
‘The teacher teaches.’
That’s correct—but it’s incomplete.
Teachers perform many different roles.
Let’s look at them one at a time.
Role 1: The Teacher as an Instructor
The teacher helps students acquire knowledge and skills.
For example, a mathematics teacher explains mathematical concepts, while a language teacher helps students develop communication skills.
Role 2: The Teacher as a Facilitator
A facilitator helps learners participate actively in their own learning.
Instead of doing all the talking, the teacher creates opportunities for students to discuss, investigate, practise and solve problems.
For example, instead of telling students everything about pollution, a teacher could divide them into groups and ask them to identify pollution problems in their community and suggest solutions.
The teacher guides the activity rather than doing everything for the students.
Role 3: The Teacher as a Mentor
A mentor provides guidance and encouragement.
Students sometimes face academic or personal challenges.
A teacher may encourage a student who has lost confidence or help a learner identify areas where they need improvement.
Role 4: The Teacher as a Role Model
Students observe teachers.
They notice how teachers speak, behave, treat other people and respond to problems.
A teacher who expects students to be punctual should also demonstrate punctuality.
A teacher who expects honesty should demonstrate honesty.
Role 5: The Teacher as an Assessor
Teachers need to determine whether students are learning.
They do this through:
- Questions
- Class exercises
- Assignments
- Tests
- Projects
- Practical activities
Role 6: The Teacher as a Classroom Manager
A teacher must create an environment where learning can take place.
That includes managing:
- Time
- Behaviour
- Classroom routines
- Activities
- Student participation
Role 7: The Teacher as a Lifelong Learner
A good teacher never assumes that they know everything.
Teaching methods change. Technology changes. Students change. Society changes.
Therefore, teachers need to continue learning.
This is why professional development is important.
So remember:
A teacher is not only someone who delivers lessons. A teacher is an instructor, facilitator, mentor, role model, assessor, classroom manager and lifelong learner.“
STUDENT NOTES
Seven Important Roles of a Teacher
| Role | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Instructor | Helps learners gain knowledge and skills |
| Facilitator | Creates opportunities for active learning |
| Mentor | Provides guidance and encouragement |
| Role model | Demonstrates positive behaviour and values |
| Assessor | Measures and monitors learning |
| Classroom manager | Creates an orderly learning environment |
| Lifelong learner | Continues developing professional knowledge |
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE
Imagine a student named Aisha.
Aisha performs poorly in mathematics and begins saying:
“I’m not good at mathematics.”
Her teacher does not simply mark her work as wrong.
Instead, the teacher talks to her, identifies where she is struggling, provides additional practice and encourages her.
In this situation, the teacher is acting as a:
Mentor, instructor and assessor.
ACTIVITY 2 — MATCH THE ROLE
Match each situation with the correct teacher role.
- The teacher gives students a test.
- The teacher encourages a student who has lost confidence.
- The teacher organizes group discussion.
- The teacher demonstrates honesty.
- The teacher explains a new mathematical concept.
- The teacher establishes classroom rules.
Answers:
- Assessor
- Mentor
- Facilitator
- Role model
- Instructor
- Classroom manager
